    summer record

Move over, 2007, there’s a new king on the hill! The summer movie season hasn’t even finished yet, and already 2009 set a record for the highest-grossing summer box office ever. The previous record holder, 2007, grossed $4.16 billion, while 2009 reached $4.17 billion and is still growing! The upcoming Labor Day weekend will only add to the total. This uphill trend was aided by two factors.

First, this summer had some huge blockbusters. TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF A THE FALLEN was only about half-a-million dollars away from reaching $400 million. Both UP and HALF-BLOOD PRINCE are the second highest grossing films for Pixar and the Harry Potter franchise, respectively. Not to mention THE HANGOVER, which became the highest grossing R-rated comedy of all time.

Second, we’re in a recession. I don’t know about you, but when I’m feeling down, even if I have very little money to my name, I go see a movie. It sounds like backwards thinking, but we all need to escape sometimes and the price of admission is a hell of a lot cheaper than packing your bags and moving to a new city.
