Adaptation of Will Eisner’s graphic novel “A Contract with God” gets four directors
Will Eisner’s graphic novel A Contract with God will see an adaptation into a live action film. The graphic novel revolutionized comics and is arguably the first modern graphic novel. It’s a big deal that this film will grace the screen and it’s not being handled lightly – the film will combine the vision of four different directors.
Indie directors Alex Rivera (SLEEP DEALER), Tze Chun (CHILDREN OF INVENTION), Barry Jenkins (MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY), and Sean Baker (PRINCE OF BROADWAY) will each direct one chapter of the story. The story focuses on the experiences of immigrants in 1930s New York City living in a tenement.
“Each tale captures the brutality, fragility, and tenderness that exists among people living in close quarters in challenging economic times.” Darren Dean adapted the graphic novel for the screen and will produce the film. Nat Sanders, editor of MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY and Lynne Shelton’s HUMPDAY, will edit the entire film.
Casting is set to begin in a few months, with shooting to be underway next year. The only film I’ve seen from this set of directors is MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY, which made it into my honorable mentions for best films of 2009. I can’t wait to check out the rest of these filmmakers’ works and am even more excited to see this project come to fruition.
