AFI Fest announces New Lights Competition winners
Last night, AFI Fest announced its joint winner for the festival’s New Lights Competition. The first-time award was given to two films – Andrea Arnold’s FISH TANK and Javier Rebello’s WOMAN WITHOUT PIANO. The New Lights Competition featured eleven films made exclusively by first- or second-time filmmakers, in order to give these rising stars a platform to exhibit their work. The competition also included some already buzzed-about titles like EASIER WITH PRACTICE and THE MESSENGER.
AFI Fest Artistic Director Rose Kuo said, “the establishment of the AFI FEST New Lights Competition has been one of many highlights for this year’s festival…our jury enjoyed and deliberated over a truly outstanding group of films, and ultimately decided that the award should be shared by these two amazing works of art.”
The jury also awarded a Special Mention to Scandar Copti’s and Yaron Shani’s AJAMI.
The AFI Fest New Lights Competition jury included a wide variety of influential and active members of the film community, including Angela Bassett, Julie Delpy, Bill Krohn, Sergio Wolf, and Yonfan.
If you’re jonesing for some film action, the festival continues to run today and tomorrow (check the schedule HERE), so you still have time to catch some excellent titles, such as AT TOWN CALLED PANIC and THE LAST STATION.
