Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin to co-host the Oscars
With the unemployment rates as they are, you’d think Hollywood actors would have been lining up to take the job as host of the 82nd Academy Awards, but that just wasn’t the case. Hugh Jackman, last year’s host, had previously declined the offer, as well as co-host picks Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller. But fear not, for the show will go on, as it was announced that the Oscars have found their hosts.
Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will serve as co-hosts of the awards ceremony to take place on March 7, 2010.
Baldwin and Martin are a very capable pair, despite not being the producers’ first picks. Martin has hosted the Oscars before, so he has the benefit of experience on his side and Baldwin was picked to act as ” a completely fresh personality for this event.”
Martin and Baldwin star alongside Meryl Streep in the upcoming release IT’S COMPLICATED, which looks to be targeted at the post-menopausal set. Â The two play frenemies both vying for the affection of the same woman (Streep). Â Let’s hope this film isn’t any indicator of what to expect from next year’s Oscars, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a production with a more universal appeal.
In the press conference announcing their partnership, each took the opportunity to jab one other with Martin saying, “I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin.” Baldwin added, “I don’t play the banjo but I’m thrilled to be hosting the Oscars – it’s the opportunity of a lifetime.”
