ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS 3D is happening
The live-action/CGI ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS movies have done well at the box office. The first one about talking chipmunks that become a popular music group made over $361 million worldwide with a production budget $60 million. The sequel (or SQUEAKQUEL) pulled in over $429 million with the moderately higher budget of $75 million.
Given what the CHIPMUNKS have done at the box office it is not surprising that 20th Century Fox has made it official that there will be a third CHIPMUNKS movie, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS 3D. The movie being in 3D is not surprising either. The studios love 3D at the moment (a love that does not appear to be dying anytime soon). It is hard to take this news with anything other than a shoulder shrug. Franchises that do well at the box get sequels, and studios still seem to want to make anything they can in 3D. OK, nothing has changed.
ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS 3D is currently set to be released on December 16, 2011. The first CHIPMUNKS film came out in December of 2007, and the second in December of 2009, so if the third movie does well, it seems incredibly likely that we could get a fourth CHIPMUNKS movie in December of 2011.
