Audiences say I do to THE PROPOSAL, showing THE HANGOVER what’s UP in YEAR ONE of the marriage
It’s either due to Sandra Bullock’s lovable lovableness or Ryan Reynolds’ abs, but audiences chose THE PROPOSAL as their movie-going experience this weekend, helping the film gross $34.1 Million. As a side note, this was Bullock’s first #1 opening in ten years, with the last being the dark rom-com FORCES OF NATURE starring herself and Mr. Benjamin Affleck. I guess Sandy B. has still got it after all these years! As another side note, she was my 8th grade crush that once got me in trouble due to the fact that my teacher caught me looking at a picture of her in a bathing suit on the Internet. I don’t recall why I was doing this but it was most likely research for a school project.
Audiences continued to show that they don’t want a cure for THE HANGOVER (#2), which in its third week grossed $26.9 million, bringing its total box office to $152.9 million. Not to anyone’s surprise, UP (#3) is managing to stay inflated with $21.3 million, making its total $224.1 million after four weeks in theaters. Newcomer YEAR ONE (#4), staring Jack Black and Michael Cera, made $20.2 million in its week one. No telling if this film will take off rolling like the first invented wheel, or if its fire will soon die out like the first invented fire. Rounding out the top 5 for this weekend was THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3, grossing $11.3 million bringing its total to $43.3 million. With films like DRAG ME TO HELL dropping out of the top 10 this week, PELHAM might be gone faster than you can countdown 3-2-1.
This week brings the return of everyone’s favorite transmorphing alien automobiles with TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN invading theaters. The film, whose predecessor made almost $71 million in its first weekend, could potentially take over STAR TREK’s position as 2009’s highest grossing film to date. ($239,444,000 gross with $75,204,289 its first weekend) After all, “cars + aliens + explosions x hot girl (in this case, Megan Fox) = $” is a classic summer blockbuster formula for success.
