  • BAD LIEUTENANT poster is awesome, but rejected by MPAA

Rules, rules, rules... They ruin everything, don't they? Well, no. But they do ruin some things, and this new poster for Werner Herzog's BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS is a fine example of that. The team behind this MPAA-rejected poster did a cool job of taking a scene from the film and making it into an animated still - the same look Linklater gave to WAKING LIFE and A SCANNER DARKLY. What does this poster boast that has them in such a hissy fit?

    A gun.

The MPAA has a long list of no-nos when it comes to ratings, but it also has lists for trailers and posters as well. The new BAD LIEUTENANT poster violates one of the rules concerning weapons: a gun can be present on a poster, but cannot be pointed at a person. Wow. So, the SAW posters can bring on the hacked body parts and bloody stumps, but point a gun at someone and bang! - you can kiss that sucker goodbye. The MPAA's regulations seem very hypocritical and very muddled. What a shame this won't make it to theaters.

Reminds me a bit of when they had to edit MAN BITES DOG's poster to be a guy with a gun, a blood splatter, and dentures instead of a guy with a gun, a blood splatter, and a baby pacifire.

That sucks. I remember I used to have a Godfather poster with a still from the scene where Michael kills the guys in the restaurant and that had a gun in it. Then again, maybe it wasn't an official poster.

Nowhere do the writers indicate Slater didn’t think he would have “the nerve”; he said he didn’t think he would do it. Where does “nerve” come into this? A little projection from Kilgannon and Robbins maybe?
