• BAYWATCH film takes a comedic dip

    Baywatch movie

After writing about 37 pages about a duo of unlikely lifeguards trying to survive in the buff bod world of “Baywatch,” comedy writer Jeremy Garelick has been given the job to not only write, but also direct, the upcoming film based on the successful 90s television show. IMDB has a pretty short resume for Garelick, including writing for THE BREAK UP and IS THIS YOUR MOTHER.  He also did an uncredited rewrite for this year’s smash comedy, THE HANGOVER.

The rights to the film were acquired by Paramount Pictures back in 2005, and the original story contained a lot of action similar to the show.  Garelick, however, wants to make the film more like the movies he loved to watch growing up – namely STRIPES and the POLICE ACADEMY series. There’s no word yet on whether or not any of the show’s cast members will be involved with the film, including The Hoff Himself, but the film is being produced by a long list of people who were behind the scenes for the original TV show.

It’s going to be a little difficult to imagine a BAYWATCH script that is intentionally funny.  Of course I watched the show every now and then when I was younger and my libido was barely developing.  Even then, I laughed out loud at the horrible acting, dialogue, stories, action, production value, and, well, pretty much everything about the show (except the running).  So far, the basic story seems a bit like “Ugly Betty” on the beach.  What kind of things should we expect from this movie?
