Blu-ray Review: INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
Blu-ray Rating: 7.5/10
You can check out my theatrical review of INGLORIOUS BASTERDS HERE. This review will primarily focus on the Blu-ray.
The INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS’ Blu-ray would probably be a seller even if the only extra was a montage of dogs vomiting (please, let’s make that a common expression). Why do I believe this unnecessarily off-putting comment? Well, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS is the latest from one of the most popular and distinct directors in Quentin Tarantino. It is funny, tense, well-stacked with Tarantino’s trademark clever dialogue, and like the director’s previous films, gets more impressive every time you watch it (I’m now at four). Naturally, many would want their own copy of the film, and if you have the technology, of course you would want to view Tarantino’s tricks and twists in the highest definition possible.
The INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS Blu-ray does have extras (and a decent amount) with none of them involving dog’s vomit (you no longer have to worry about that, you are welcome). However, sadly the Blu-ray is lacking the feature that I imagine Tarantino fans would be most interested in – a director’s commentary.
Yeah, there is no commentary from one of the world’s biggest and most famous film fans talking about his latest film. It is always interesting to hear Tarantino talk film, and this would of been great opportunity to hear the platinum level cinephile talk about his influences, decisions, ideas, and more for over two and a half hours with a director’s commentary for INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS.
However, the Blu-ray does contain a lengthy interview between film critic Elvis Mitchell with Quentin Tarantino and Brad Pitt, which amounts to the film’s most fascinating feature. It is not a play-by-play by Tarantino on INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, but he does offer a lot worth listening to information on the film and Tarantino and Pitt’s working relationship.
You can get amusing stories about Quentin Tarantino with the feature A Conversation with Rod Taylor, the actor that plays Winston Churchill in the film. It is pretty cool to the hear eighty year old actor talk about Tarantino, who he obviously respects.
The “full feature” of NATION’S PRIDE, the film that is being premiered in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS directed by Hostel director and INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS co-star, Eli Roth, is available on the Blu-ray (but not in Hi-DEF). The entire thing is about six minutes long and contains clever gags and moments not seen in the clips shown during INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. There is also The Making of NATION’S PRIDE extra, which has the nice twist of actors from the film, in character, talking about NATION’S PRIDE. And Eli Roth as fictional NATION’S PRIDE director, Alois Von Eichberg, makes this fun little feature quite memorable.
Unfortunately, there is a feature whose title, The Original INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, could be considered misleading. The title suggests that the original film which served as inspiration for Tarantino comes with the Blu-ray. This is not the case, it is actually just a quick look at the original film that features what appears a trailer for the original and also points out the cameos of by people involved in THE INGLORIOUS BASTARDS in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. This is certainly not as cool as having the original feature on the Blu-ray, but it’s still a worth a look.
A poster gallery tour by Elvis Mitchell of the fictional posters that were made to be used for INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, such as posters for NATION’S PRIDE and some Extended & Alternate Scenes and also worth checking out. Although, the first of the there scenes that has to do with the lunch between Dr. Goebbels, Fredrick Zoller, and Shoshanna is by far the most interesting.
The Quentin Tarantino’s Camera Angel (clips of the very creative woman who bangs the slate before each scene starts for the film) and Hi Sallys (where the crew randomly says hello to Taratino’s editor Sally Menke) feature behind-the-scenes levity. Trailers and movie trivia also appear on the Blu-ray.
The INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS Blu-ray allows you to own one of the most entertaining films of the year in wonderful Hi-DEF, and also gives you several cool features that any Basterd should enjoy.
