Blu-ray Review: PAPER HEART
If it is a theatrical review you are looking for, then head over HERE. And while you’re at it, check out our super fun interview with the film’s stars Charlene Yi and Jake Johnson HERE.
Blu-ray Rating: 7/10
Just in time to curl up with your significant other by the fire to warm yourself and your heart, PAPER HEART is getting the DVD and Blu-ray treatment, as it hits stores tomorrow, December 1st. Whether you saw this unconventional exploration of love in the theaters or unfortunately missed it, this is definitely one you’re going to want to pick up.
Charlene Yi (KNOCKED UP) and Jake M. Johnson (filling in as a faux version of the film’s real director, Nicholas Jasenovec) are your tour guides on this adventure, as the two trek across America to explore and document love in its various intricate and complicated forms, including Charlene’s own staged romance with actor Michael Cera (SUPERBAD). The result is a heartfelt look at relationships of various shapes and sizes, through both fiction and non-fiction forms. It is a film as layered and emotion-filled as love itself!
The Blu-ray edition of the film is loaded with bonus features including deleted scenes, a few featurettes, a music video for the original song “Heaven” by Yi and Cera, live musical performances from Yi, and some hilarious deleted interviews with a few of Charlene’s famous friends. The featurettes – PAPER HEART Uncut and THE MAKING OF- are fun to watch, showing the challenges in making a film that jumps back and forth from documentary to narrative. Yet, if you have not yet seen the film I’d first ask “why are you reading this right now?” I’d then advise you to wait until after your first viewing to watch these two special features, as they somewhat spoil the fun and take you out of the illusion of the fictitious love story between Cera and Yi, which otherwise the film pulls you into.
As for the other highlights of the Blu-ray edition of PAPER HEART, the deleted interviews where Yi talks to her various actor friends about love are hilarious enough to be worth the purchase alone. We see bits and pieces of these interviews, as well as others with Yi’s KNOCKED UP costars Seth Rogen and Martin Starr, within the film yet many had to be cut. This impressive list includes Paul Rust (I LOVE YOU, BETH COOPER), Jason Ritter (PETER AND VANDY), Bill Hader (ADVENTURELAND), Bobcat Goldthwait (WORLD’S GREATEST DAD), David Krumholtz (I LOVE YOU, MAN), Demetri Martin (FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS), Paul Scheer (HUMAN GIANT), and Rob Huebel (I LOVE YOU, MAN). Most notable is the interview between Yi and Huebel, where he does the entire 5 minute long interview before realizing Yi is not a small Asian man.
Bottom line:
If you’re looking for something with both a lot of humor and a lot of heart, that’s nice on the eyes and nice on the soul, then I would definitely check out PAPER HEART on Blu-ray.
