Hey Kate, you might like to know that according to the Bright Star website (American site) that it is on 50 of the critic's top 10 list!

Also, you might be interested in knowing that although the Academy has made this erroneous decision, BAFTA has included it in many categories in the long list to include Best Original Screenplay. According to Steve Pond's article, it is also eligable for a WGA award as best original screenplay as well. http://www.thewrap.com/ind-column/wga-awards-he...

Thanks for clarifying that. I've not seen many of the critics top 10 for the year except for CNN's which does in fact include Bright Star so that's nice to see!

I think I may have been unclear in my choice of words saying that film has been ignored by critics – critics who saw it (ME INCLUDED) seemed to love it, yet very few critics have included it in year-end wrap-up lists (ME NOT INCLUDED). It's a shame that a film that received praise has been, for all intents and purposes, ignored. It's a beautiful in many ways, and Abbie Cornish's performance is my favorite female performance of the year, but this is the first story about BRIGHT STAR/Oscar noms to break, and it's heart-breaker.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I've been pissed off at the low film distribution to begin with. Very few people even had access to SEE the film and despite what was said in this article, I've read heaps of fantastic reviews from critics – and yes it has been snubbed repeatedly but the Academy did more than merely snub this film, it refuses to allow Ms. Campion to even be considered for an OBVIOUS original screenplay. **** the Academy!
