Cannes 2011: New photo from Lars Von Trier’s MELANCHOLIA

“No more happy endings.”

That ominous quote has been making its way around the web, after being uttered by the provocateur known for his lack of upbeat conclusions, Lars Von Trier, in response to his upcoming film, MELANCHOLIA.

Well, with the film set to take a bow at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, not only have we finally gotten the film’s first trailer, but now we have a new picture (thanks to Empire, who also have a really interesting interview with Von Trier) from the hotly anticipated sci-fi disaster picture.

Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård, and Udo Kier, the film follows a pair of sisters during one of their weddings, who discover that the world is about to end.

The film’s trailer appears to show a film that is very much rooted in this new style that Von Trier has crafted after a film like ANTICHRIST, and I must say, it looks absolutely fantastic. The type of sci-fi film that I’d expect from the filmmaker, this could very well be the toast of the Croisette, if everything we’ve seen so far is to be believed.
