Catherine Zeta-Jones joins “Rock of Ages”
Catherine Zeta-Jones is in final negotiations to join ROCK OF AGES. She’s familiar with the musical movie world, having won Best Supporting Actress for her turn as Velma Kelly in CHICAGO.
She’ll play the villain in the film, a role that wasn’t in the original stage production, who is as “if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child,” according to producer/director Adam Shankman. “It’s a character that we only really came to in the last month...The character was invented to streamline the stories…She is this hardcore, moral majority, arch-conservative who wants to shut down rock’n roll in the great city of Los Angeles."
Shankman is ecstatic to add such a musical talent to his cast, saying “It’s like the musical gods just blessed us!” While the cast is filled out with big names like Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, and Tom Cruise, it’s still uncertain how well they’ll be able to handle the musical aspects of the production.
Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, the New Line production is scheduled to begin shooting May 19 in Miami. Zeta-Jones joins Alec Baldwin, Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Mary J. Blige, Juliana Hough, and newcomer Diego Gonzalez Boneta.
ROCK OF AGES follows a small-town girl (Hough) as she arrives in Hollywood at the height of the 1980s rock-music scene. She falls in love with a young musician (Boneta), but also grabs the attention of Stacee Jax (Cruise), a rock star at the height of his career.
ROCK OF AGES is set for a June 1, 2012 release.
