• Chris Pine takes the NORTH stage

farragut-northHollywood’s newest It Boy, Chris Pine, doesn’t act like he’s got something to prove – but following up his breakthrough role as Captain James T. Kirk in STAR TREK with a two-month off-Broadway run in a political play might indicate otherwise. The good news is, anyone who checks out Pine as young press secretary Stephen Bellamy at the Geffen Playhouse’s run of FARRAGUT NORTH will probably walk out of the theater singing Pine’s acting praises.

SEX AND THE CITY’s Mr. Big, Chris Noth, co-stars as Paul, a role he originated in the play’s first run in New York City in 2008.   Olivia Thirlby (hands down, one of my favorite young actresses working today) also reprises her role, as sexy intern Molly.

FARRAGUT NORTH chronicles Pine, “as a young press secretary working for a fast-rising candidate.  With confidence and power beyond his years, he’s convinced that he and seasoned campaign manager, Paul, can steer their team into the west wing without breaking a sweat. But before the polls close at the primaries, Stephen’s percieved invincibility is shattered as he falls prey to backroom politics…”

I was lucky enough to catch FARRAGUT NORTH for its first show last night at the Geffen, and was totally blown away. Don’t let the poster fool you – this is Pine’s show. For nearly two hours, Pine is on stage as Stephen, flawed and charming and sad and, ultimately, ruthless. For a first night performance, it was pitch perfect.

In 2007, there was some buzz that George Clooney would be directing a film adaption of the play, with Leonardo DiCaprio in Pine’s role. IMDb still lists the film as “in development,” with DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way, Clooney, and Leo all attached.

FARRAGUT NORTH will be playing at the Geffen Playhouse through July 26.
