    Keir

If you have somehow missed that we at Gordon and the Whale are big-time Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck fans, let me reassure you – we are big-time Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck fans. We’re also big-time fans of Ned Vizzini’s book It’s Kind of a Funny Story, so when we found out that Boden and Fleck (SUGAR, HALF NELSON) were adapting it to the screen, we were pretty pleased. We’ve known since August that the indie writer/directors would be on the project, and we’ve been tracking casting chatter since then (including Zach Galifianakis and Viola Davis).

But, today, finally, gloriously, we have the full casting confirmation for the film from Focus Features, including who will be playing our lead character, Craig. It’s Keir Gilchrist! Gilchrist has been steadily working since age eleven, so you may recognize him from DEAD SILENCE and THE ROCKER. He’s currently on Showtime’s “The United States of Tara.”

Hit the jump to see who will be co-starring with Gilchrist.

Gilchrist’s co-stars will include Galifianakis as a fellow patient in the mental ward Craig checks himself into, Davis as the ward’s staff psychiatrist, Emma Roberts (NANCY DREW) as Craig’s love interest in the ward, Zoe Kravitz (THE BRAVE ONE) as his long-time crush, Aasif Mandvi (THE PROPOSAL) as a hospital psychiatrist, and Lauren Graham (“Gilmore Girls”) and Jim Gaffigan (AWAY WE GO, the upcoming GOING THE DISTANCE) as Craig’s parents.

This is some interesting casting, and I am very much looking forward to seeing Gilchrist take on such an important leading role. Fleck, Boden, and Vizzini fans, what do you think?

    • Wow, he's exactly how I pictured Craig when I read the book.
