CONFIRMED: Paul Giamatti to star in McCarthy’s WIN WIN with Amy Ryan
If you are a first time reader on GATW, then you didn’t see this pun coming: looks like Tom McCarthy’s new film is rapidly shaping into a win win situation. A few weeks ago we found out McCarthy was scouting for a young actor to play his wrestler in the film WIN WIN, which is “loosely based [on] a suburban New Jersey family and the teen runaway who changes their lives and turns around the sagging fortunes of a high school wrestling team.” On that scouting journey, Paul Giamatti was photographed with McCarthy at a high school wrestling match, which peaked my curiosity on Giamatti’s involvement. Well, looks like I’m the smartest man alive, because Giamatti’s just been confirmed to star in the film.
Giamatti’s role still hasn’t been announced, but I’m betting that he’ll play the coach of the wrestling team. Amy Ryan has also been announced to star in the film. Ryan’s most notable role right now is her brief stint on NBC’s “The Office,” but this time next year, she’s going to be crowned the new indie queen (taking Parker Posey’s spot) with all the fantastic roles she’s racked up in those little films that could.
The fantastic folks over at Fox Searchlight have already picked up the film with Mary Jane Skalski and Michael London producing. If you look back at some of Searchlight’s previous films (JUNO, (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, CRAZY HEART, AMELIA, THE WRESTLER), you know these people know their indies. Shooting begins in April.
