David Lynch talks RETURN OF THE JEDI
No, your eyes do not deceive you. It has long been rumored that experimental director David Lynch (MULHOLLAND DR.) was once someone George Lucas sought out to helm the third sixth installment of his STAR WARS series. It was also once rumored that Stanley Kurbrick was yet another choice for JEDI, but upon meeting screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan in my teenage years and asking him about said rumor, it was directly dispelled with a grin and a giggle.
I digress. This one goes down as one of the all-time cinema partnerships that never was but will always be fantasized about. A Lynchian STAR WARS? Would the Ewoks have instead been people in bunny suits with a laugh track behind them (see INLAND EMPIRE)? Possibly Kyle MacLachlan playing Han Solo? I can only imagine the darkness and pure oddities that would have been a part of the galaxy far, far away. I imagine they would have had to add an extra “far” for Lynch.
Lynch goes on to say he had “next door to zero interest” and was quite adamant about not directing the film, but again it is still fun/weird to think about. Check out the video after the jump!
