    Despicable Me Screen Shot

Back in July, we brought you the first trailer for the upcoming animated comedy DESPICABLE ME; at the time there was much debate on whether or not it could be considered a trailer as opposed to an extended clip from the film, and our dear James was perplexed as to why the trailer was released almost a year in advance of the theatrical release.

The first trailer did what I feel it was supposed to do, spark our interest and anticipation of the film, though I'm not going to pretend that I hadn't forgotten about this film until I was trolling the interwebs looking for some film news to comment on. I also won't pretend that I didn't LOL during this newest trailer when Gru (Steve Carell) pops that little kid's balloon animal.

The movie centers on Gru, a super villain with ambitions to steal the moon, until three orphan girls cause him to rethink his plan. I'm pretty stoked about the whole villain with a heart of gold angle, sounds promising.  Throw in some villian vs. villian antics very reminiscent of Spy vs. Spy and an Alfred Hitchcock reference, and I'm totally sold.

It's films like this that make me glad to use the "I'm a kid at heart" excuse to see an animated feature.  The voice lineup in this film is something to be excited for as well. It features Steve Carell, Will Arnett, Jason Segel, Kristen Wiig, Danny McBride, Russell Brand, and Julie Andrews, among many notable others.

DESPICABLE ME hits theaters on July 9, 2010.

Can I just state the obvious here. Two big films this year about women and aimed at women and both were directed by men and both didn’t live up to the hype.
