Being the giant Jane Austen nerd that I am, Sally Hawkins first came to my attention in the Masterpiece Theatre version of PERSUASION. From there, I recognized her from her appearances on the sketch comedy show “Little Britain” but it wasn’t until 2008 that she came to more widely known fame with her break-out performance in HAPPY-GO-LUCKY.

It seemed Hawkins had fallen off the grid for a while, so I was pleased to learn that she had a small part in AN EDUCATION and she has a few more films in the works. Today it was announced that Hawkins will join Juno Temple, William H. Macy, and Lisa Kudrow for Abe Sylvia’s directorial debut, DIRTY GIRL, a coming of age movie set in the 1980s.

The story centers on a slutty high school student named Danielle (Temple) who befriends a shy, overweight gay teen named Clarke. They run away together in a stolen car in search of Danielle’s father, who is believed to reside in California. Hawkins will play Danielle’s mother, a “reformed slut” named Sue-Ann. Macy is Sue Ann’s fiance, and Kudrow will play Clarke’s mother.

There are plans for the film to include an 80s soundtrack and Broadway style dance numbers. The film is written and will be directed by Sylvia, a Broadway performer and choreographer-turned-director.

    Filming will begin in March.
