ENCHANTED sequel on the way
One of the biggest surprises I had in 2007 was the Disney film ENCHANTED. After years of awful experiences with Disney musicals, I walked into the theater jaded and cynical, but walked out with a smile on my face and expecting every object I saw to break out into song.
Now Disney is looking to create that experience again some time next year. The studio has started working on a sequel to ENCHANTED. Jessie Nelson (I AM SAM, FRED CLAUS) will craft the script and Anne Fletcher (27 DRESSES, THE PROPOSAL) will be directing. This is only good news if Disney can create magic a second time, but given their track record with sequels, is this really the best idea?
ALADDIN was brilliant, but it was followed by sequels that kind of spoiled the experience of the original. Then they did the same with THE LION KING, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and just about every other movie in their catalog. At the moment, with ENCHANTED and the recent release of THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, the Disney musical seems to be making a comeback and I just don’t want another crappy sequel spoiling it.
Barry Josephson and Barry Sonnenfeld will be returning as producers but there’s no confirmation on the original cast or composer Alan Menken, whose music is a large part of what made ENCHANTED so good, coming back.
