Fox goes to REHAB
I’m sure there’s an Amy Winehouse joke in here somewhere, but I’m going to take the high road on this one (no pun intended). 20th Century Fox has picked up the rights to REHAB, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The comedic script was written by Sam Laybourne, whose writing credits include “Arrested Development” and “Cougar Town.” The story follows a man who checks into rehab in order to reconnect with his former high school classmate and lifelong crush, who is now a rock star struggling with addiction.
Celebrity addiction and substance abuse has been tabloid fodder and the basis for many a reality show storyline. We like to believe that we are sensitive to the problems that those in the spotlight face, but in reality we get off on seeing those who seemingly have it all spiral out of control. The concept of REHAB seems interesting, but it is unclear how much of the story will focus on the actual rehabilitation process as opposed to the same tired romantic comedy storyline taking place in a new setting.
Will Gluck is producing the film, and has expressed the desire to direct the film as well. Gluck is the director of the cheerleader comedy FIRED UP! and the yet to be released EASY A, which stars Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes, Lisa Kudrow, Stanley Tucci, Thomas Haden Church, and Patricia Clarkson.

Amy Winehouse is not the only celebrity with a history of drug abuse. Robert Downey Jr, Robin Williams, Sigmund Freud, Stephen King are the first names that come to mind. I read a funny top 100 famous drug users in rehab best and I was surprised how many famous scientists and novelists used drugs.

It sounds like it could be a promising comedy film perhaps with some insight into the dark effects of drug abuse. A bit like the recent Get Him to The Greek which was quite dark and about drugs yet still very funny. The premise reminds me of another good comedy set in a Drug and Alcohol Rehab Center that I can’t remember the name of right now.
