Fox Searchlight has acquired the rights to the Tony Goldwyn (THE LAST KISS) directed film BETTY ANNE WATERS, written by Pamela Gray (MUSIC OF THE HEART). The film has an all-star cast featuring Hilary Swank (MILLION DOLLAR BABY), Sam Rockwell (MOON), Melissa Leo (EVERYBODY’S FINE), Minnie Driver (GOOD WILL HUNTING), Juliette Lewis (WHIP IT), Clea DuVall (ZODIAC), and Peter Gallagher (THE O.C.). The film will hit theaters sometime this fall.

WATERS is based on the true story of a high school dropout and single mother (Swank) who puts herself through law school over two decades, all in the name of justice to help overturn her brother’s (Rockwell) unlawful murder conviction. The film is described as “an exploration of the profound bond between a brother and sister – a love so deep, so unequivocal, so complete that it becomes a force that will not be denied or defeated.”

Sounds to be a little ERIC BROCKOVICH-esque. With the success of THE BLIND SIDE, I would expect this to be the year that studios really delve into the inspirational tales of the human spirit and selflessness at its best. Not that this is a bad thing. We could all use more films like this…as long as they don’t feature Swank in a push-up bra.
