This bit of news came as a bit of a shock to me. I'm somewhat indifferent to the casting of Mia Wasikowska as the lead in Tim Burton's ALICE IN WONDERLAND. She looks the part and I'm sure she'll do a fine job, but if the trailer is any indication, the movie will truly belong to Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter. Had Frances Bean Cobain been cast, I'd be a lot more interested in the role of Alice. But who is Frances?

I think everyone has that one transition-band. The band that is most present as you are changing from a kid into an adult, and for me that band was Nirvana. I had every CD I could get my hands on, every b-side my friends would record on tape for me and I read any article and biography I could find on them. Frances Bean Cobain is the daughter of Kurt Cobain (lead singer of Nirvana) and Courtney Love (lead singer of Hole). In other words, the girl is Grunge royalty. As if that wasn't enough of a claim-to-fame, she can also say that she attracted the attention of Tim Burton, who asked her to star in ALICE IN WONDERLAND. Shockingly, he turned him down.

Sources say that Tim Burton “thought she would be perfect, but she wants to go to university." It's no secret that Frances's family life has gone through some troubles (drug use, suicide, etc.) so you'd think she would also be a troubled young person, but it looks like she has a really good head on her shoulders if she'd rather pursue her studies than become a celebrity. It sounds silly, but I feel somewhat invested in her well-being because of the impact her dad's music had on me as an awkward teenager. I'm rooting for her.
