GHOST IN THE SHELL is wildly popular, and still has hordes of die-hard fans. Dreamworks had this in mind when they purchased the rights to adapt the story into a live-action feature film. They announced that they were going to go the trendy 3-D route, and hired Jamie Moss (STREET KINGS) to begin penning the screenplay. That was some time ago, and not too much has developed since then. Moss must not have been getting the job done, as it has been announced that Dreamworks has hired a new writer to take over scripting duties, and this writer is fresh off a sure-to-be-hit film: SHUTTER ISLAND.

Laeta Kalogridis has been chosen to pen the story, and I think she is a great fit. I haven’t seen SHUTTER ISLAND yet, clearly, due to its postponement of theatrical release, but the trailer alone gives me chills. In case you are a little out the outside on what GHOST is, then here is a little information:

“Ghost in the Shell follows Major Motoko Kusanagi’s pursuit of the cyber-criminal The Puppeteer, who commits crimes by ‘ghost hacking,’ or taking control of human minds. We learn that the Puppeteer is actually an autonomous artificial intelligence created by a government foreign affairs and counter-terrorism agency called Section 6. Kusangi’s body is largely bionic, and when she and the Puppeteer come together a unique synthesis takes place.”

I hope this material is able to develop into an awesome sci-fi film. I’m still a bit skeptical on 3-D, but AVATAR could influence my mind on that. Speaking of AVATAR, Kalogridis has also been reported to have helped with that script. So, no, Kalogridis is no newcomer to 3-D.

I am hoping that we will have an enjoyable GHOST IN THE SHELL film in theaters before too long, introducing many new fans, like me, to the franchise.
