Guy Ritchie to direct DC Comics’ LOBO
Warner Bros. has just grabbed Guy Ritchie (SNATCH and the upcoming SHERLOCK HOLMES) to direct DC Comics' LOBO. Lobo first appeared in 1983's OMEGA MEN (written by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen), then spawned his own series. The comics are about an alien interstellar bounty hunter, and the film's plot is described as "a seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled anti-hero who drives a pimped out motorcycle...lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc. Lobo teams with a small town teenaged girl to stop the creatures."
Don Payne helmed the most recent draft, and Joel Silver, Akiva Goldsman, and Andrew Rona will produce. Warner Bros. will be aiming for a PG-13 release, relying heavily on great visuals and the rawness that Ritchie gave us in LOCK, STOCK, AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS, and SNATCH. Not ever reading the comics and judging from the top photograph, I'm skeptical about the PG-13 rating - it didn't work for the violent video game adaptation of MAX PAYNE.
Shooting begins early next year.
