The new HARRY POTTER flick is only a couple weeks away from release and the buzz seems to be escalating. Hollywood.com’s Paul Dergarabedian has a short review of the movie, in which he speculates that the Oscar’s new 10 Best Picture quota might mean a spot for the boy wizard. The reason I’m intrigued by Paul’s review isn’t because I need motivation (I’ll be lining up at midnight like every other geek), it’s because he admits to not being a “huge fan of the franchise.” If someone who isn’t a fan can walk out of the theater saying that the film is “a tour-de-force that combines style and substance, special effects and heart,” then I’m excited!

One thing I am curious about that Paul Dergarabedian doesn’t address in his article is whether the movie would still be an Oscar contender had the Academy not upped number of nominees. That’s the one thing I hate about having 10 Best Picture nominees. Every year I’ll wonder which movies deserve to be there and which are there because they had five extra spots to fill. Hopefully HALF-BLOOD PRINCE won’t disappoint! And if you haven’t already signed up for a chance to tickets to an early screening of the movie on July 13th (that’s two whole days before your friends get to see it!), then stop being such a muggle and go do that right now!
