If this turns out to be true, then it is sad news, but it looks like NEWT might be no more. The information comes from Floyd Norman, a Disney veteran who worked with the studio during the 50s and 60s and has recently also worked with Pixar.

In a comment thread at The Animation Guild Blog, Floyd was asked about the state of NEWT and he responded simply by saying, "Oh, and NEWT is dead."

I love Pixar. They have never let me down, though they've come close in the past. As the studio enters a new decade, I want it to be as innovative as it was during the last 10 years. It's hard to keep faith in them when they seem to be stuck making sequels. TOY STORY 3 I can understand, but do we need CARS 2? And then there are the rumors that MONSTERS INC. might be next in the sequel train. According to Disney, this is what NEWT was going to be about:

"What happens when the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet are forced together by science to save the species, and they can’t stand each other? Newt and Brooke embark on a perilous, unpredictable adventure and discover that finding a mate never goes as planned, even when you only have one choice. Love, it turns out, is not a science."

So if NEWT is out, what happens to its vacant summer 2012 spot? Unfortunately, Floyd Norman was not able to comment. Disney made an official announcement today that CARS 2 was still on schedule for summer 2011, so that only leaves THE BEAR AND THE BOW, which is supposed to come out December 2011. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets pushed back to 2012.
