  • Help us pick the winner for our TAKING WOODSTOCK contest!

    photo-1

Last week, we posted a contest giving our readers a chance at winning an autographed set piece from the film TAKING WOODSTOCK, which opened wide today. We had to narrow it down to five (5) of our favorite entries. Last night, some of us GATWers racked our brains and read over every entry and picked the top five (5) people who gave us bands, locations, and provided visuals about how their Woodstock would look.

We want you, our readers, the people that inspire us to keep this site going, to select the winner. All you have to do is read all of the contest entries that we've provided and pick your favorite one, then comment with the name of the contest entry. Comments will close at 11:59 PM, Thursday, September 3rd. On Friday, September 4th, we'll tally 'em up and announce the winner!

Check out our picks and tell us yours after the jump!

    Loriguthrie:
So, I gave this some thought. Rewrote. Deleted.
I have a strange affintiy for Woodstock 69 since that was my birth year :) I know there is music out there that is just as good, but for some reason I would keep it as is...I am sure the stories have become larger than life over the years, but after listening to the Audio Book of Taking Woodstock, I'd like the imagine it went down just that way.
But...Since that's not the contest and I would LOVE to have this piece and have been obsessing over the movie coming out- I'll play buy the rules.
Setting: Oregon , Fall, late 70''s -ISH (No Particular Reason- Just thought most of the acts I would like to see were still in their prime, getting started, or still creating a new sound) However, some I would like to fast forward to current to see what would happen if sounds changed.
    Patti Smith
    David Bowie
    Woody Guthrie
    Morrisey (The Smiths)
    Willie Nelson
    The Clash (Pre mainstream/MTV days)
    Thin Lizzy
    The Cure
    Jane's Addiction
John Lennon. Minus Yoko, but would like to see how he would be now. So, that kind of screws up my 70's setting.

    lauren lester:
Location: Zilker Park in Austin (but on a nice spring weekend, I want people to actually enjoy themselves).

    Lineup:
    1. Loveburger (only if they promise not to break up during the show. also, shirts will be on sale at the front)
    2. Rex Manning (the public spoke and say no more! Rex Manning will perform, and his ooh la la will get the crowd dancing-even if it isn't Rex Manning day)
    3. The Oneders (or The Wonders. I'll let them work out what they want on the bill).
    4. The Pinheads (they can be as loud as they want!)
    5. Stillwater (because let's face it, Russell Hammond is a golden god-and so good looking)
    6. The Venus in Furs (to bring a little glam rock sex appeal)
    7. Barry Jive and the Uptown Five (Barry's singing will make the crowd want to get it on)
    8. Howard the Duck feat. Cherry Bomb (say what you will, but that little duck can dance.)
    9. Crucial Taunt (Cassandra will appeal to the straight male audience, and they promised not to play "Stairway to Heaven" unless provoked)
    10. The Blues Brothers (duh)

If any of these bands are unable to perform at the last minute, I will of course allow Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band to take their place.
    Thank you for your time.

    kalyons:
I wanted to go to Woodstock, but unfortunately I was too young to get their on my own, and my older sister did not want to be responsible for me. My ideal line-up would include the following with all original members:

    1. The Beatles (My sister gave me all her Beatles LP's when she went off to college, but I never got to see them live. She still asks for me to give those LP's back to her. NO WAY!!)

    2. Deep Purple
    3. The Who
    4. Queen
    5. Free
    6. Blood, Sweat and Tears
    7. Jimi Hendrix

I would bring in some late '80's early 90's bands as well:

    8. Lynch Mob (Nothing Like George Lynch and his masterful guitar playing!!!!!!!!)
    9. Queensryche
    10. Savatage (Jon Oliva's voice range is amazing!)

That rounds out my top 10, but 10 just is not enough, so I would also add: Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Sound Garden, Nickelback Tool, Skidrow and Tesla.

The era this would take place in would be late '60's early '70's even though some of these bands were not around then.

My perfect venue would be none other than the Rock 'n' Roll capital of the world......CLEVELAND, OHIO! There is an outdoor venue (actually in Stowe, OH) called Blossom Music Center. It is surrounded by beautiful woods. The event would take place the second week of October during Indian Summer when all the leaves are in the process of changing and temperature is a mild upper '60's low '70's to match the decade of the concert.

Hippies and hard rockers and everyone in between are welcome!!!!

    demi adejuyigbe:
    It'd be a current concert. 2009, maybe 2010. Save for The Beatles and Queen, they'd all be alive. They'd play in Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, and the entire stadium would be completely packed. The room would be full of stadium lights, all centered on the stage. Naturally, I'd have fantastic, possibly front row seats, and my ears would be royally rocked so hard that I would probably go deaf at the end of the concert. However, I'd be okay with it, since I had already had my aural dream come true only minutes prior. With any luck I wouldn't faint. No promises, though. The band list would be the greatest;

    The Beatles.
    Queen.
    Beck.
    Vampire Weekend.
    The Smiths.
    The Killers.
    The Strokes.
    We Are Scientists.
    Passion Pit.
    Flight of the Conchords.

If I were lucky, they'd maybe even collaborate on a couple of songs, or in jest, cover the other bands' songs. A closet indie rocker's dream come true, no doubt. If a truck struck me on the way out of the stadium at night's end, I'd be totally content with dying as happy as I'd be.

And this is what it'd look like in my trapper keeper
    dreamconcert

    dannythomas:
It's hard to cut it down when theres so many great bands, I'd love to see a 100 band list ( #99- Oingo Boingo #100 Eminem) joking of course, eminem would never be invited :)
I'd have the festival in the same location on Max Yasgur's 600-acre land. It would be in October and I'd have it set in the 70's because I'd want everyone to remember the great drugs, free love, and harmony not like in 99' where its was remembered for fires, rape, and violence. Anyways here's my ideal woodstock if it were just 10 bands.

    Sublime
    311
    Smashing Pumpkins
    David Bowie
    Queen
    Led Zeppelin
    The Rolling Stones
    Bob Marley
    Jimi Hendrix
    Creedence Clearwater Revival

This wouldn't be in order of appearance because my brain will fart if I think about this anymore. I couldn't choose anyway, i'd make them pull straws.

I don't want to seem like I'm trying too hard to win, or like I'm a sore loser or anything, but there seems to be a ridiculous amount of uh, dupe accounts. Maybe. If I'm wrong, then sorry.
