Hopefully, a sequel to SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is not to be

I’m glad that I had an extra pair of pants nearby when I heard this news.

It’s finally here! The sequel that we’ve all been waiting for! The Weinstein brothers plan to reunite with Miramax (and new CEO Mike Lang) to cash in on a bunch of unnecessary sequels to titles in their catalog including…SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE! And my mom thought I was crazy for writing fan fiction about Billy Shakespeare and Viola for the last twelve years.

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE  is one of many films with planned sequels in the mix (check out Tim's post HERE about sequels for BAD SANTA and ROUNDERS), but it’s easily the most head-scratching. The first film was two hours of cringe-inducing puns that somehow won Best Picture at the 71st Academy Awards, making other Oscar robberies (Costner over Scorsese) pale in comparison.

I understand that Hollywood is out of ideas, but can’t they at least make a sequel to a Best Picture-winning film more in need of one than SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE? How about GODFATHER PART FOUR centering on Sofia Coppola’s character? Or SCHINDLER’S LISTS?
