  • I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF – the worst movie of 2009?

    I Can Do Bad

The only thing I love more than a well-organized, clearly thought-out Top Ten list is the single order of a solitary Bottom One list. The end of a year always brings with it a bevy of Top Ten lists to be endlessly mulled over and debated by those who make them and chew on them. But what about the worst of the worst, the bottom of the barrel? Even better, what about the worst of the worst, the bottom of the barrel, as determined by math? I know, math is scary, but sometimes, it's seriously useful, especially for bored film buffs seeking to bring their beloved audiences wickedly fresh content. And, with that, I think math just may have helped us discover the worst film of 2009. Maybe.

In case you've randomly started reading this story without perusing the headline, the worst film of 2009 is Tyler Perry's I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF. At least, that's what IMDb's Bottom 100 list would tell us.

The Bottom 100 list on IMDb is a hilarious minefield mix of films - notorious schlock like FROM JUSTIN TO KELLY and GLITTER, classic choices like TROLL 2 and BATTLEFIELD EARTH, and little-seen (and obviously horrible fare) like SNOWBOARD ACADEMY. But I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF is the only entry from 2009 to make it on to the list. At number 63, it's got a rating of 2.1 out of 10. By IMDb's math and the intentions of such a list, this is the sixty-third worst film in existence.

The Bottom 100 has some specific criteria that must be met for a film to be included; criteria surely meant to keep films from being sunk by just random haters. Each film must have tallied at least 1,500 votes. I CAN DO BAD has over 3,700. Of those, over 2,300 rate the film as a solid 1 out of 10. That's over 2,300 registered voters on IMDb that hated this film, and hated it enough to turn their loathing into a clicked vote on the site.

A quick perusal of the message boards for the film's IMDb page give us a pretty good glimpse as to just what some of those viewers hated so much. Personal favorite topic headlines include:

    "Tyler Perry vs Uwe Boll"

    "This is so wrong"

    "WHAT THE HELL?!"

"The worst film of all time"

In terms of box office, I CAN DO BAD won its opening weekend back in September. It was Perry's second-best opening of all-time, even though it's currently only his fourth-best earner (with a total of over $51 million in returns). This was not a bad film that no one saw. This is no I HATE VALENTINE'S DAY redux. This is a wide release from a bankable director.

It is, of course, important to note the critical reaction to I CAN DO BAD - it's rated 62% Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes, a fair enough rating that wouldn't stand out to anyone for ridicule. It's actually Perry's second-highest rating on the site, with DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN getting the worst of the critical scorn, rating as 25% Rotten. MetaCritic gives I CAN DO BAD a score of 55, a middle-of-the-road rating that, once again, wouldn't guarantee its inclusion on most Worst of the Year lists. If anything, it would simply be forgotten.

So why the hate? Why enough hate to put it smack in the middle of one of my very favorite lists on IMDb? Is I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF the worst film of 2009? Or is the math just, well, bad?

I saw the movie in theaters and it's not that bad to be named the “best of the worst”. It could be very bad math or just general disdain for Tyler Perry yet his films are watchable. But I mean really!! From a logical POV there are FAR worst movies critically and cinematically.

I haven't seen it, nor will I ever.. but I find it hard to imagine that this film is actually worse than PUBLIC ENEMIES.

I enjoy the RIPPING OF A MOVIE THOUGH!

I just thought it was interesting that this was the only film from this year to make the Bottom 100 list on IMDb, when SURELY there were many other prime candidates that come to mind.

Maybe I'll make it a new column for 2010 – Rip A Movie A Week.

I dont think this is the worst movie I think it was an awesome movie that tells the story of so many people! It gives a voice to all those who have been this or similar situations. Life has so many stories good n bad that go untold, this movie is just one example of that. So i wanna say thanks to the cast, Brian White, Taraji P. Henson, and the writer director Mr. Tyler Perry for telling our story, God bless!

I have seen a few STINKERS in '09 –I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF was NOT one of them. Good film. Tyler Perry, you either love him or you don't. I do. And, I might point out that Spike Lee had just about every early film he made panned by Hollyweird and it's (in the pocket) critics. What the hell do they know? Not very much, obviously. With few exception (and I can't think of one at the moment) everything out of Hollyweird the past few years have been standard boring cookie cutter tripe. ===Well, ok, Avatar redeems them –barely.

I think if one is not a christian or a God-fearing person, then one would rate this as totally bad. As a christian, I enjoyed most of the movie because the concept was powerful and inspirational. What spoiled the movie for me and why I think it received such bad reviews was the church scenes and the interminable singing.

I can appreciate preaching and I love spiritual songs, but I thought they dragged out these scenes to the point that, if I didn't want to see the outcome of this movie, I would have gotten up a long time ago.

I've seen all of Tyler Perry's movies and I have to agree that this was one of his worst made films. But on a positive note, it really had the potential to do well. It has quite a number of topical issues that one can sit down and discuss with family, especially teenagers. I was also rooting for Adam Rodriguez to have a great breakthrough with this movie. Oh well, so much for hoping.

I just watched this terrible movie. It made no sense at all. This mother is missing and no one cares to call the cops? You send an unknown man to live with a single woman because he did some work around the church. And he cleans up good, too.

Whats was that noise I heard through the whole movie? Oh, the sound of it sucking more and more and more.
