  • Indie post-apocalyptic movie 2084 gets a trailer

Independent genre films can be a mixed bag. It's always hard to judge them on their aesthetic, as they're working with what they've got. And what they've got is a very limited budget and very little outside financial support. However, what smaller indie films lack in visual punch, they often make up for with potent storytelling. Might as well play to your strengths right?

Well, hopefully that rings true for this latest trailer. 2084 is an independent film centered around the post-apocalyptic world. Check out the trailer and some of my own thoughts after the jump.

I just recently wrote about the next film from Xavier Gens, THE DIVIDE, a few days ago. In that article I expressed that the apocalyptic setting, while often used, isn't quite ready to die. I believe that the true potential of that setting could offer some astonishing insight into humanity. Something which is found in Cormac McCarthy's The Road, which was kind of missed in the film adaptation.

2084 appears to use the setting in order to instill fear and suspense in the audience. The short trailer works ardently to establish the tone of the film, which I think it succeeds quite well at doing. Were it not for that corny LOST style title sweep at the end of the trailer, I'd have nothing but praise for this preview.

The movie even has some viral marketing going on, which I stumbled across while perusing their website--  www. 2084movie.com. A link on that page leads you to this site, which has some interesting stuff including a chronology of events leading up to the movie. As a warning, each of the sites have audio that plays automatically. Annoying, but kind of cool if you can listen. If you're interested, I'd poke around on the site.

I think that may have been my personal bias coming into play. Cobra has been one of my favorites for a long time and even though I recognize how important the original Rocky is to the whole series, I found the movie itself to be a tad slow and boring. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good movie mind you just a personal preference BTW, Stallone only got paid 30K to do Cop Land.
