Indie Spotlight: Neko Neko Films
A bunch of crazy kids in Texas with a film-based dream and a love for sans serif type. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Which is why, when the boys of Neko Neko Films emailed me about checking out their site, I couldn’t say no. Lucky for them (and you!), these Nekonians are pretty funny, so it’s my pleasure to give the GATW world an introduction to them and what they do.
“Neko neko” is Indonesian slang for “a novel idea that only makes things worse.” The boys’ films aren’t just films they’ve made, they’re films about making films they’ve made. Sound complicated? It’s not. It’s like all your film school friends actually filmed their “process” – i.e. all the terrible and hilarious ideas that go into the making of an indie short. Their Rockbottom Productions trilogy chronicles the creation of their “Action Movie,” “Horror Movie,” and “Drama Movie” (their take on the horror genre is my personal favorite). Along the way, the boys poke fun at independent filmmaking, genre demands (including, sometimes, how to even pronounce the genre they’re trying to create in), and themselves.

The boys of Neko Neko have recently relocated to Austin – Texas’ own fair Slackerwood, and released a new site to go along with it. It’s nifty. Be sure to check it out HERE in order to take in the whole mess of other stuff they’ve cooked up – more shorts, three videos about their resident rapper “Tupint,” and their other love – parkour (no, really).
