Talulah Riley is a pretty hip girl. She listens to an eclectic variety of music – Jeff Buckley, Doris Day, The Cure, and Blondie just to name a few – and also revealed her remarkably good taste in cheese (which I hold dear to my heart). She started acting at age 18, taking Saturday classes. She got her first big gig in Joe Wright’s PRIDE & PREJUDICE, when he cast her as the younger version of an older actress. Things started to pick up there, and she landed the lead role in ST. TRINIAN’S. The film did so well in the UK, a sequel was green lit, ST. TRINIAN’S 2: THE LEGEND OF FRITTON’S GOLD, and is now in post-production.

After interviewing Tom Sturridge, our next guest we got a chance to speak to was Miss Riley (who’s soon to be Mrs.). It was difficult to associate her to her part in PIRATE RADIO, because she now has blonde hair, which led me to asking if she had dyed her hair for her role as “Blonde” in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming INCEPTION. The answer was ”no,” and yes, I did ask for some INCEPTION scoops – but news on that is tightly sealed for now.

Check out the interview after the jump and read her responses to the questions we asked about some of her awkward scenes in the movie. Be warned, there are a few tiny spoilers. Tiny, tiny, tiny.

On what she thinks of her character in PIRATE RADIO:

I have to say, I did have slight issues. I was [sorta] saying, “No girl would ever, ever, ever behave like this in a million years,” but Richard said, “it’s the ’60s – it’s free love.”

On if she likes her character (Marianne):

I don’t know…I think she’s the kind of girl at school that I wouldn’t have been friends with (laughs)…She seems a bit mean.

On her character being a sex object:

I certainly don’t think she’s an object. No, she (laughs) has a very determined little path of her own…I think you know, it was the sexual revolution…that’s what I’m [Marianne] clinging on to…she’s a girl of her time.

On swapping beds from Dave (Nick Frost) to Carl (Tom Sturridge):

I know, it’s all very confusing, isn’t it? (laughs) I think thing is, you know, she’s meant to be with Carl, obviously, because they’re of an age [same], and that’s just sweet. But, I [do] think Nick Frost is a very attractive man, and the DJs were like gods…rock stars, so it will be like meeting your idol. She’s young, and I think she can be excused.

On what she knew about Pirate Radio before shooting:

Not really, I knew of it. I knew of “Radio Caroline” because my mother told me about it, she used to listen to a little transistor radio. I didn’t know it was illegal to play rock ‘n roll and pop music in the UK for more than an hour, which I found quite shocking. Our impression [Y generation] of it was a time of “free love” and anything goes, but clearly not. Thanks to the pirate DJs, that we the beginning of the [music] freedom.

On the process of shooting the scenes of Marianne coming to the boat from a ferry:

We were literally (laughs) coming backwards and forwards from the main ship on a little boat, it wasn’t a long lens. Richard was sort of shouting (laughs) our actions. It was very salty…and bobby. But I like the motions, so that’s fine. I had a really nice time.

    On working with Tom:

He’s one of my best friends, so we knew each other before we did this. So, it was kind of quite strange actually, because we’ve never kissed or done anything vaguely, you know, in that direction. So to be suddenly facing and having to lie naked with him under a sheet…it was pretty, pretty…uhm, not awful (laughs), but different.

On lying next to Nick Frost:

Nick, who is very jubilant and funny and extroverted all the time, suddenly it was his first time. We both had never been in a bedroom scene before, and we both got really nervous, and he was sort of going, “so I’m getting married,” (laughs) I think he got nervous, and I did, too. Yeah, first was the best. (laughs)

On a personal playlist of ’60s music:

Richard gave us all iPods in the beginning of shooting with [a] full ’60s collection on it. Things I prefer to listen to from the collection are The Trogs, The Turtles, The Who, The Beatles, [and] all the greats.
