  • IRON MAN 2 is still the hero of the weekend box office

IRON MAN 2 had a fly second weekend at the domestic box office, despite the release of another big summer-spectacle film in Ridley Scott's ROBIN HOOD. IRON MAN 2 kept its box office crown by taking in an estimated $53 million, while ROBIN HOOD finished second with $37.1 million.

ROBIN HOOD's take seems at least a little disappointing, given that it had the same production budget as IRON MAN 2 with $200 million, and it made around $16 million less in its opening weekend than IRON MAN 2 did in its second week. IRON MAN 2's total domestic take is now more than its production budget with $212 million, and ROBIN HOOD has a ways to go to complete that task.

Third and fourth place went to the other two opening wide releases, with LETTERS TO JULIET starring Amanda Seyfried making $13,750,000, and the romantic comedy JUST WRIGHT starring Queen Latifah earning $8.5 million. However, I'm sure their budgets were much less than $200 million (they were not listed).

The fourth SHREK film, SHREK FOREVER AFTER, and the Saturday Night Live skit -inspired comedy MACGRUBER come out next week. SHREK FOREVER AFTER seems to have a good chance at the top spot as the SHREK franchise has done very well at the box office, and it will be going against IRON MAN 2 in its third week. Plus SHREK FOREVER AFTER is fairly family-friendly, giving it a larger potential audience than MACGRUBER, which is rated R.
