It’s official: JUDGE DREDD is coming back
Unfortunately, we all remember the 1995 film adaptation of JUDGE DREDD. And by "film adaptation," I of course, am referring to the 96 minutes of pain and wasted life we'll never get back. Few went home that day satisfied. Well now, Deadline tells us that we may be in line for a long overdue do-over. That's right Gordonandthewhalers, JUDGE DREDD is back.
Last year it was announced that Alex Garland, collaborator with Danny Boyle on SUNSHINE and screen writer of 28 DAYS LATER, would be writing an adaptation for DREDD. And now it seems as if DNA has come to a deal for financing of the film, which is sitting at a cool $5o million from Reliance Big Entertainment and IM Global.
Pete Travis is also slated to direct the movie. Yes, you're remembering correctly that Travis also directed VANTAGE POINT. This is definitely not typical of his work. Travis is also the mind behind docudramas such as OMAGH and ENDGAME.
DREDD, for those of you who don't know, is another comic book adaptation. Appropriate, seeing as we are living in what is quickly becoming the golden age of comic book movies. JUDGE DREDD takes place in the dark, gritty world of the future and Judge Dredd has been charged with keeping some degree of order. Wielding a big gun and an even bigger attitude, Dredd acts as judge, jury, and executioner.
Sounds good to me. As of now, there are no details of dates, but the money is there, so it should be starting any minute now. I just hope it ends up looking something like that guy up top.
