J.J. Abrams might be taking on the MICRONAUTS
These days, when there is news on J.J. Abrams, the geek-world listens. After the critical and financial successes of STAR TREK, can you blame us for wanting to know everything about the guy? This latest bit of news comes via a Wall Street Journal article discussing Hollywood's current obsession with toys.
"J.J. Abrams, who created the TV show 'Lost' and directed this summer's 'Star Trek' film, is in discussions to produce a movie about Japanese toy line Micronauts, which Hasbro just acquired."
The Journal is an incredibly reliable news source, but I find it strange that a big story like this would break so nonchalantly in that publication. If it is true, it sounds awesome, but what the heck are Micronauts?
The toy line was created in the late 70s but didn't make it into the next decade (though they have existed in comic book form), which helps explain why I have no memory of them. I hadn't been born yet and by the time I was playing with action figures, it was all about G.I. Joe and Transformers. Judging from this old commercial, though, I should've been playing with Micronauts! They seem like combination of Legos and G.I. Joe, which would have been perfect for me. I'm not sure how "interchangeable parts" would translate to film, but if anyone can figure it out, it's Abrams.
