John Woo isn’t my favorite director out there, but he definitely isn’t my least favorite. He did make FACE/OFF, which is still awesome. So I am intrigued to hear that he has announced plans to make an epic aerial World War II film properly titled FLYING TIGER HEROES. Woo is remaining in China, not willing to sell out to Hollywood, and has still pulled in a large budget of $161 million. In case you don’t know, THE FLYING TIGERS was the nickname for “the 1st American Volunteer Group, a fighter squadron that flew missions against the Japanese in World War II. THE FLYING TIGERS destroyed some 300 enemy aircraft while only suffering 14 causalities during the war. The planes the squadron flew were featured the very recognizable shark-teeth design on the nose.” You can see that design in the photo above. Here’s what Woo has to say about this project:

“This is an extremely important production…(the film will be) the most spectacular aerial battle scenes ever seen in Chinese cinema…This Yunnan-themed film emphasizes China-US friendship and the contributions of the Flying Tigers and the people of Yunnan during the War of Resistance.”

Plans for this project include a cast consisting of a mixture of Chinese and American actors. FLYING TIGER HEROES is definitely an ambitious project for Woo and Chinese filmmaking, but I think he has the potential to make something special. At the very least, we should have some pretty fun and exciting dog fights to watch on the big screen.
