JUDGE DREDD could have had Duncan Jones as its director
If you’re not aware of Duncan Jones or his 2009 film MOON, do yourself a favor and get to know him. Though his early years were wracked with the fame of being David Bowie’s son, he’s hopefully about to come into his own as an artist. MOON, which was Jones’ directorial debut, was one of the most inventive and intrinsically interesting pictures of the year.
Because of his first movie’s brilliance, people were speculating as to what his next project would be. While we now know that SOURCE CODE is underway, I’m happy to report that Duncan Jones passed up the opportunity to direct JUDGE DREDD. Hit the jump for the full story!
The ManMadeMovies blog sat down with Duncan Jones and learned a bit about his close encounter with the comic book craze. Here’s what Jones had to say…
“I was in fact sent the script to look at. It’s a great script, and I hope I will not rue the decision of passing on it. Thing was, I had such a strong idea of what I wanted to do with a DREDD movie, I could not bring myself to take it on and not do it my way!
…and its not like I could do it as a sequel either; my Dredd would have been really weird, and dark and funny, but not your traditional introduction to a hero character. I dont even know if I could have made my version of the film pitch-able. It was maybe too off the wall.”
While I’m sure Jones’ adaptation of JUDGE DREDD would have never made it into actual production, I’m glad that he decided to work on something a little less schlocky than a comic book movie. I’m continually ashamed to see decent and respectable actors spend time in comic book movies, as I feel like they could be spending that time delivering great performances in movies that lack a cheese factor.
I’m looking at you, Anthony Hopkins. You too, Robert Downey Jr. I’m just hoping more of cinema’s talent follows Jones’ lead and looks ahead of this current fad. SOURCE CODE, Duncan Jones’ follow-up to MOON, sounds infinitely more interesting than yet another “graphic novel,” adaptation. That movie is due out in 2011.

I love David Bowie! I know a lot of people aren’t as keen on his more recent stuff, but as far as I’m concerned Heathen and Reality are up there with the best. I’ll admit, Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust are my favourite two, but after fifty years of making music, you can’t deny that the man’s still got it!
