Lasse Hallstrom to take over THE DANISH GIRL for Tomas Alfredsson
Well, this is depressing.
According to an interview given to the Swedish press (and via The Playlist), DEAR JOHN director Lasse Hallstrom has revealed that he will be taking over for Tomas Alfredsson on the upcoming Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow-starring transgendered drama, THE DANISH GIRL.
Based off of the novel by David Ebershoff, THE DANISH GIRL follows the story of the first ever sex change patient, Einar Wegener, a Danish male whose love life and art career set him up to go through the male-to-female operation. Kidman is slated to star as the lead, with Paltrow set to play Kidman’s character’s wife, Gerda Wegener.
So we go from the director of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN directing this film, to the same man who helmed the epic piece of brilliance that was DEAR JOHN. Great switch if you ask me! Yeah, maybe not. Personally, if the story wasn’t nearly as intriguing as it is, this would automatically fall off of my radar. Knowing that Alfredsson left due to being denied more time to work on the script, this is not a good sign. I haven’t seen anything yet that really gives me confidence that Hallstrom is a good filmmaker, and with the complete failure that was DEAR JOHN, this is not good news for those interested in the project.
That said, the premise is intriguing, and the cast so far is solid, so this may not be a complete loss.
