  • LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE is headed to Broadway

    miss sunshine

I'm writing this unsure whether it is a good thing or a bad thing. LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE is not the first movie to get the Broadway treatment, and it certainly won't be the last. Thankfully, some talented Tony Award winners are behind this project, so maybe it won't totally suck.

"William Finn and James Lapine will workshop an adaptation of the 2006 film hit LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE. Finn (FALSETTOS, A NEW BRAIN, ELEGIES, SPELLING BEE) has written the score while the book and direction is by James Lapine (FALSETTOS, SPELLING BEE, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, PASSION)."

Film people often complain that Hollywood can't come up with original ideas because they're constantly mining themselves and other sources for movies. I wonder if Broadway people feel the same way about projects like this.

On its own, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE is a very musical movie. The DeVotchKa-heavy soundtrack is still one of my favorites and I hope the writer's incorporate some of DeVotchKa's style into the musical. If we have any Broadway lovers out there, we'd love to get your take on these movie-to-musical adaptations. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Purely from a technical perspective, I think my main concern is that most of the movie takes place in a car, literally and symbolically moving the people along a journey. My first thought when reading this was how they were going to pull that off on stage. Will it be like in Grease when they just bring a car on stage?
