I don’t follow the U.S. version of the “The Office” as closely as I did the UK version. But, from time to time, I watch a few episodes on Hulu or Netflix and it gives me a few chuckles and I ask myself, “why did I never fully give this version a chance?” One thing I do like about the American “Office” is that some of the writing staff are also stars of the show.  One such star is Mindy Kaling, better known as Kelly Kapoor.

Kaling is set to co-write a romantic comedy with fellow “Office” writer Ben Forrester, who also worked on “King of the Hill” and “The Simpsons.”  The project will be called THE LOW SELF-ESTEEM OF LIZZIE GILLESPIE.

The story centers on a woman who, due to low self-esteem, is a serial loser dater. Just as she is nearing the bottom of the barrel, she is pursued by a super hot guy, causing her life to take an unexpected turn for the better.

For those of you thinking that women with low-self esteem seems like tired and typical rom-com fodder, I am right there with you. Though the premise sounds a bit disappointing, I am hoping that the writing duo of Forrester and Kaling can make this work. As Kaling’s Kelly Kapoor is no stranger to this problem, perhaps that means that Kaling is not as well. Hopefully they can make a film that is realistic and insightful while actually being funny.

And please, let them cast an actress that has comedic chops. But I am getting ahead of myself, the script hasn’t even been written yet.  However, one cast member is already confirmed – Kaling herself, who will play a supporting role.

The film will be produced by the same production team that brought us JUNO, John Malkovich’s production company Mr. Mudd, along with Mandate Pictures.
