Some franchises just keep soldiering on. Somehow, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE is one of them. The fourth installment of the series has been hinted at for over a year now, and it appears we finally have some real movement. Series producers Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams have tapped screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec to pen M: I4 (or will it be M:IIV?).

Appelbaum and Nemec have spent a considerable amount of time working under Abrams’ tutelage already – they previously co-executive produced four seasons of his television series “Alias.” Recently, they created the new-defunct television series “October Road,” the U.S. version of “Life on Mars,” and the new series “Happy Town.”

This is not the first time Abrams has dug into the “Alias” pile for writers for his films, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3’s screenwriting credits went to Abrams and now-hot screenwriting duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (TRANSFORMERS, TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, STAR TREK), who previously wrote and co-produced for the television series. If an Abrams-produced film is a proving ground for new writers, Appelbaum and Nemec have hit the jackpot. I look forward to their inevitable scripting of TRANSFORMERS: SHIA LABEOUF IS STILL MARKETABLE, DAMMIT and the as-yet-untitled cinematic imagining of classic board game Double Trouble.

No word yet on casting, though it’s to be assumed Cruise will return as Ethan Hunt, even if it is not a starring role. Look for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4/IV in 2011.
