MONEYBALL closing in on a director
A little less than a month ago James brought you the story that Sony had two candidates in mind to fill the directing vacancy for MONEYBALL created by Steven Soderbergh. The two directors being considered by Sony were Bennett Miller (CAPOTE) and Marc Webb (5OO DAYS OF SUMMER). Now, Variety is reporting that one of those two directors is currently in negotiations for the project. Read the rest of the story after the jump.
Who is it? I will give you two hints: One, he directed Phillip Seymour Hoffman in an Oscar winning role. Two, Philip Seymour Hoffman was not in 500 DAYS OF SUMMER. Yes it's Bennett Miller that is close to being the new director of MONEYBALL.
Bennett Miller would be joining a very promising project. MONEYBALL already has a huge name and a talented actor attached in Brad Pitt. Also, the project's screenplay is written by two very respected screen writers, Steve Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. Sorkin wrote the screenplays for A FEW GOOD MEN, CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR, and David Fincher's upcoming film about Facebook, THE SOCIAL NETWORK. Sorkin also created the TV show "The West Wing." An impressive resume, and so is Zaillian's, who wrote the screenplays for AMERICAN GANGSTER, AWAKENINGS, and SCHINDLER'S LIST, which he won an Oscar for.
Here is synopsis for MONEYBALL thanks to IMDb:
The story of Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget, by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players.
Bennett Miller has not directed a feature film since CAPOTE, which was released in 2005; MONEYBALL seems to be a great project to break that directing absence with.
