Netflix to give us THE WIZARD OF OZ for free
The world's largest online movie rental service, Netfix, will treat America to a free online screening of the newly restored classic, THE WIZARD OF OZ on Saturday, October 3, 2009. The film, celebrates its 70th anniversary this year and will be reissued later this month by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.
Netflix is allowing anyone to stream the film for free beginning at 9:00 a.m. ET on Saturday October 3rd, and continuing for 24 hours. Netflix members with an unlimited plan will be able to watch THE WIZARD OF OZ in hi-definition on their TVs via Netflix ready devices. Details about the screening are available here.
Netflix will also host a free concert in New York City’s Central Park on Tuesday, September 29th. Performers include Jennifer Hudson, Julianne Hough and other artists who’ll perform updated versions of the songs from the film. The show will feature The Roots' drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson as director of a special band assembled for the festivities. The concert will precede a showing of THE WIZARD OF OZ on a giant inflatable screen at Rumsey Playfield.
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group will release the digitally re-mastered THE WIZARD OF OZ on Blu-ray, DVD, On Demand and
Digital Download on September 29th. To commemorate the film's first time in the Blu-ray format, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group will issue a "70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition" featuring 16 hours of bonus features.
