New trailer for NINE
I’m a sucker for a musical, there’s no way around it. At a very young age, I religiously watched both VHS tapes of the SOUND OF MUSIC at least once a week. I literally had to fight back tears when I heard the news that Julie Andrews’ vocal cords had been damaged during a throat operation. As my tastes have matured, this love has persisted, so when I heard that Rob Marshall, director of CHICAGO and MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, was adapting the musical “Nine” for the big screen, you can bet your teeth my ears perked up.
NINE is based on the 1982 Maury Yeston musical, which was adapted from Fellini’s 8 1/2 (one of my personal faves). The film features an all-star cast, which includes Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Marion Cotillard, and Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson. I’d be seeing this film based on Daniel Day-Lewis’ involvement alone.
In the movie’s newest trailer, the most talented actors takes a backseat, as Kate Hudson is in the spotlight. Hudson’s career has been made with romantic comedy roles, so it’s nice to see her shaking it up a bit. In a move that is obviously intended to cast a wider net (i.e. men and Kate Hudson fans) for the audience of this film, Hudson is called on to sing and dance. I’m not completely sold as she sings about her love of “Cinema Italiano,” in a song that was not in the original musical, though it is fun to see her shimmy and shake at such an ankle-breaking speed while the life of Daniel Day-Lewis’ character and his many women are cut in.

NINE is the story of Guido Contini (Day-Lewis), a world famous film director in the midst of a mid-life crisis. He is dealing with personal and professional crises while trying to juggle the many women in his life, including his wife (Cotillard), his mistress (Cruz), his muse (Kidman), his confidant (Dench), an American fashion journalist (Hudson), a prostitute (Fergie), and his mother (Sophia Loren).
NINE opens on December 18 in New York and Los Angeles and December 25 nationwide.
