Nickelodeon to shell out Ninja Turtles TV series, Paramount to shred cinemas with a feature film
Looks like Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael, and my favorite, Michaelangelo, are to set to shred once again. THR announced today that Nickelodeon has bought the global rights (for $60 million) from The Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment to develop a new CG-animated TV series, which is slated to premiere in 2012. This deal means that the CW network will no longer air their animated TMNT series, and that show will run until August 31, 2010.
Also in awesome news, Paramount Pictures (Nickelodeon’s partner) plans to release their full-length TMNT feature around the same time. Earlier this year, The Mirage Group announced the TMNT feature, saying it will be live-action and will have “a BATMAN BEGINS-style reboot, showing the origins of the team of crime-fighting mutant turtles.” John Fusco (YOUNG GUNS, HIDALGO, THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM) was hired to write the script, and Steve Barron, director of the original three TMNT films, was rumored to direct.
There’s not word yet on how the new feature film will be made – CGI or live-action – but if I had to guess, they’ll keep Mirage Group’s vision and shell out with live-action.
