Rob Marshall’s take on Fellini’s 8½, NINE, has been officially moved from a November 29 release date to December. The film will open on December 18 in New York and Los Angeles, with a wide release on December 25. It was previously pitted against THE ROAD, OLD DOGS, and limited releases of NINJA ASSASSIN and ME AND ORSON WELLES. Of course, the biggest contender in a Thanksgiving weekend release is that wicked turkey drug, triptafen, and the very real possibility that your audience will be asleep on a La-Z-Boy, not running to the theaters.

Of course, the new release dates put NINE up against DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MORGANS? and the limited release of THE YOUNG VICTORIA. Oh, and a little something called AVATAR. NINE’s full release date doesn’t look much better, as Christmas Day is stacked with all kinds of fare this year: IT’S COMPLICATED, SHERLOCK HOLMES, THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS, and ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL. That’s one packed Christmas, people, with a solid mix of something for everyone. I suspect the ladies that would have turned out for NINE are already committed to Nancy Meyers’ IT’S COMPLICATED for love and chuckles, courtesy of Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin. The more indie of film lovers who may have shown interest in a Fellini remake (of sorts) are most likely chomping at the bit to see PARNASSUS. What does that leave for NINE?

Marshall’s take on 8½ features an all-star cast, with Daniel Day-Lewis as film director Guido Contini, a man with too many women in his life and issues dealing with all of them. Some of the women in the cast include Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard (in her first big role since winning her Best Actress Oscar), Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, and Kate Hudson. There’s, of course, a bevy of singing and dancing, as the film is based on the original 1982 Broadway production of “Nine,” which previously won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The move is being attributed to the Weinstein Company’s scheduling of THE ROAD on NINE’s original date, as the Weinsteins produced both films.
