    Christopher Nolan and his shadow

Chris Nolan is to DC as John Favreau is to Marvel. They are both the de facto leaders of each film-to-screen camp and, as such, have many people on their toes waiting for their next move. Today Christopher Nolan gave all the “toe-standers” something to talk about. Nolan sat down with The LA Times to give an update on how both BATMAN 3 and SUPERMAN are coming along….

The (thus far) unnamed BATMAN 3 seems to be moving along. According to Nolan…

“My brother is writing a script for me and we’ll wait to see how it turns out…. He’s struggling to put it together into the epic story that you want it to be…Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story, and in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story.”

Nolan’s brother Johnathan (who is rumored to direct the upcoming SUPERMAN project) sounds like he is hard at work putting together a great conclusion to Nolan’s brilliant BATMAN trilogy. As a dedicated fan of all things Batman, I appreciate that they won’t be stretching the movies out beyond their breaking point. I also can appreciate Nolan’s tight-lipped attitude when it comes to the key villain for the third film. However, he did let it slip that the caped crusader wont be facing off against “Mr.Freeze”. That’s not unexpected since Nolan’s BATMAN franchise has stayed away from the science and super-powered villains. To cap off his comments about BATMAN 3, Nolan said this…

“My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these things don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling. And it harkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That’s what we do.”

BATMAN fanboys will make of that what they will, but Nolan doesn’t end there. If BATMAN isn’t your cup-o-tea Nolan moves swiftly into his involvement and vision for the SUPERMAN reboot. Nolan recalls when David Goyer first approached him with the project…

“He basically told me, ‘I have this thought about how you would approach Superman’. I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting.”

Goyer is currently writing up the script for the film and Nolan is supervising the whole project, so expect to hear more about the project in the coming year.

Christopher Nolan’s next project hitting the big screen, INCEPTION, will be released on July 16th.
