    SAG Awards

I still haven’t fully processed all the Golden Globe nominations as of yet, but today we get smacked with the doozy that is the Screen Actors Guild Award nominations. I’ve gone cross-eyed, but I’m still committed to pulling out the good for you, my wee whales.

The SAG Awards are a special bunch, as awards are only given to actors, actresses, and ensembles. The Screen Actors Guild Awards also utilize a very unique voting system. The Guild randomly selects two panels of 2100 SAG members each from across the United States to choose the nominees for television and motion pictures. The final ballot is voted on by the entire Guild, which clocks in around 100,000 members. The SAG Awards are truly awards for actors, by actors.

Hit the jump to see the full nomination list and some of my thoughts.

In the theatrical realm, UP IN THE AIR, PRECIOUS, and INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS all tied for top nominations, with three each. For television, three was the magic number of nominations for “Dexter,” “30 Rock,” and “The Closer.” George Clooney garnered his eleventh SAG Award nomination for his work in UP IN THE AIR, and Meryl Streep earned her twelfth for JULIE & JULIA. Michael C. Hall also earned his eleventh nomination, care of his work in “Dexter,” coupled with his previous work in “Six Feet Under.” Edie Falco led the women of television with her fourteenth nom, thanks to “Nurse Jackie.” She has previously been nominated for “The Sopranos,” winning five total Actors (the cute name for the award) for that work.

One of the big surprises is that Daniel Day-Lewis was not included in the Male Actor in a Leading Role category for NINE. Most people have speculated that “his” spot went to Jeremy Renner for THE HURT LOCKER. I’d call that a wise trade indeed. The ladies of UP IN THE AIR also brought it home, as both Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga earned nods for Supporting Role.

One of my favorite parts about the SAG Awards is their inclusion of awards for ensembles. When it comes to the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, I will eat my own hair if the incredible team from INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS doesn’t win. Seriously, chomp chomp.

The 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live nationally on TNT and TBS on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, 7 p.m. CT, and 6 p.m. MT from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.
