Macy, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Judy Greer, Ron Perlman, Emma Stone, George Lopez, Marlon Wayans, and Damon Wayans.

I can’t say that I completely agree with this comic being made into a live-action movie, but it has been in print for over 50 years which means there’s got to be some good source material to work with, right?

It was announced today that Owen Wilson has signed on as the voice of the title role in MARMADUKE. From what I recall from skimming past this comic in the funny papers, Marmaduke doesn’t really talk, but relies on the narration of the Winslow family to explain his situations.  The film will see “Marmaduke navigate a volatile Mutts vs. Pedigrees turf war, woo the purebred of his dreams and overcome a fall from grace,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.  I guess one would need a voice for that.

What is most baffling about this movie is its target audience. Who is FOX making this movie for? I can’t see the kids of today being too interested in the comings and goings of an oversized dog. Has Marmaduke achieved the same pop culture status as Garfield or Alvin and the Chipmunks to deserve a live-action feature?

The film is set to be released in June of 2010.
